PCLinuxOS N1PTT-TR3 RELEASED! (TESTING NOW CLOSED)

ON BEHALF OF TEXSTAR, The Ripper Gang is pleased to announce the first public beta ISO release of what will ultimately become PCLinuxOS 2009. Due to some very personal issues, Texstar has taken a temporary leave of absence, but not to worry folks, he'll be back very soon. We're releasing this series of beta iso's under the name of N1PTT to honor the loss of Robert Green, a long time dear friend of the PCLinuxOS community who recently succumbed to cancer. Rest in peace my friend.

This beta iso features kernel 2.6.26.6.tex2, KDE 3.5.10, Open Office 2.4.1, Firefox 3.0.3, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Frostwire, Ktorrent, Amarok, Flash, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D and much more. We decided to use kde3-5-10 as our default desktop as the we could not achieve a similar functionality from kde4. We will however offer kde4 as an alternative desktop environment available from the repo once we stabilize it. We request that only our more experienced PCLinuxOS users test this beta release and report any issues with it in the forum provided specially for it.(testing now closed)

Testers are advised to install this beta into a separate partition for temporary use only. This and any subsequent beta iso's are considered static installs and will not be upgradable to the 2009 Final, so please don't install this with the idea of using it long term as a work station. Some users may be asked to test file edits, etc; to attempt bug fixes, but updated packages will not necessarily be supplied. When enough bugfixes accumulate we will release the next beta iso.

Special thanks goes out to, Gettinther, He's the one that really made this ISO happen. Thanks for pulling everything and everyone together! The guys and gals from Mypclinuxos.com , Hack.mypclinuxos.com, and the Beatification team for their help and efforts in fixing problems, building packages, and making this distro look great. We couldn't have done it without them. The PCLinuxOS community who stepped up to help us out and have been patient during this long wait. Last but not least, Enki Consulting for providing hosting for our website and ibiblio.org for hosting our distribution.

What the heck is RSS?

You guys might ‘ve heard people mentioned about RSS almost everywhere. RSS this RSS that, RSS here RSS there.. What so great about it? As it’s regularly asked question and thought it might be worth putting together a page to define RSS and hopefully shed some light on the topic.

What the heck is RSS?

RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites.

In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.

The problems with bookmarking

  1. You as the web surfer had to do all the work
  2. It can get complicated when you are trying to track many websites at once
  3. You miss information when you forget to check your bookmarks
  4. You end up seeing the same information over and over again on sites that don’t update very often

Well, RSS Changes Everything

What if you could tell a website to let you know every time that they update? In a sense, this is what RSS does for you.

RSS flips things around a little and is a technology that provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date information sent to you for you to read in your own time. It saves you time and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it was published.

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. Many people describe it as a ‘news feed’ that you subscribe to.

I find the ’subscription’ description helpful. It’s like subscribing to a magazine that is delivered to you periodically but instead of it coming in your physical mail box each month when the magazine is published it is delivered to your ‘RSS Reader’ every time your favorite website updates.

How RSS actually technically works is probably a lesson for another day but the key today is for you to understand why it’s good and how to use it.

Let me say right up front that I’m not the most technically savvy guy going around - but even I can use RSS. At first I found it a little strange to make the change from bookmarking to RSS but I found that when I started that I just couldn’t stop.

How to Use RSS

Get an RSS Reader - The first thing you’ll want to do if you’re getting into reading sites via RSS is to hook yourself up with an RSS Feed Reader.

There are many feed readers going around with a variety of approaches and features - however a good place to start is with a couple of free and easy to use web based ones like Google Reader and Bloglines. Either one will do if you’re starting out (I use Google’s Reader) - as I say there are many others to choose from but to get started either of these are fairly easy to use and will help you work out the basics of RSS.

Both of these feed readers work a little like email. As you subscribe to feeds you’ll see that unread entries from the sites you’re tracking will be marked as bold. As you click on them you’ll see the latest update and can read it right there in the feed reader. You are given the option to click through to the actual site or move onto the next unread item - marking the last one as ‘read’.

The best way to learn how to use either Google Reader or Bloglines is to simply subscribe to some feeds and give it a go. Both have helpful help sections to get you up and running.

Note: other options to tracking websites that you might already be familiar with include using pages like MyYahoo, MyGoogle and MyMSN.

Find Some Feeds to Subscribe to - there are two places to look for a site’s feed:

1. On the Site
2. In Your Browser

On Site Subscription

Over the last few years you may have noticed a lot of little buttons and widgets appearing on your favorite sites and blogs. Little orange buttons, ‘counters’ with how many ‘readers a blog has, links called RSS, XML, ATOM and many more.

3 Simple Tips on Detecting Spyware and How to Fix It

60% of AOL users in America do not know that active Spyware and malware is running rampant on the networks and infecting their systems. Over 90% of the World's PC users have no clue that there is software running on their computers that slowly eats away at system resources, steals valuable information and violates their privacy. Don't be a statistic - from just 3 simple tips on detecting Spyware and how to fix it, you can set yourself apart from the rest.

Tip # 1

Spyware rarely work alone, they come in clotted groups, usually from different or sometimes a similar source online. When they enter a computer system, the code works in such a way that they start to take over certain bits of the computer and 'tells' the computer to do things - usually without your knowledge. Anything from sending out emails, taking your particulars and passwords or resetting the system configuration - it leads to system degradation and a violation of your privacy as a PC user. You can easily detect Spyware when you notice things like your disk space slowly eroding away day by day, a degradation in your computer's performance, unwanted pop-ups ads, internet connectivity problems and strange messages that say 'you are already logged into another computer'. These are the textbook hallmarks that the computer has been invaded by adware and Spyware.

Tip # 2

Fixing it is a hazy ground between a simple operation and a complex one. Usually, tracking down the rogue programme and deleting it is enough to solve your Spyware problems, but if the issue goes deeper - for instance into the boot memory or even damaging the registry, then sometimes a cleanup of the entire computer would then be needed. I have heard of people booting up in Windows 'safe mode' to root out the Spyware, because sometimes traditional deletion doesn't work. This is also a viable way to clean up your computer - I mean, no body wants to go through the hassle of having to backup all the data, reinstall Windows and set up everything from scratch.

Tip # 3

Using a good antivirus program will also help. As major companies have diversified their operations like Norton and McAfee, a host of free online antivirus programs can now be found online, that can also help you scan and remove Spyware. Spyware can also include malware - and malware has been known to contain 'worms' and Trojan viruses piggybacking on their code. Anti-virus programmes are a good front-line defence against these harmful programs.

I would recommend that everyone complements the use of their anti-virus with a good Spyware cleaner programme. There are a variety of programmes out there from which to choose on the Internet and they do a more focused and defined task of rooting out and wiping these malicious programmes from your system. Think of them as sweeping out the corners that anti-virus programmes sometimes cannot reach. Spyware cleaners have a lot going for them - they are easy to use, small in size and a lot of them are complimentary or shareware. No hassle in payments and filling forms; the solution is just a few clicks away. With those 3 simple tips on detecting Spyware and how to fix it, I hope you all have a great and safer time surfing online.

Basic Adsense Tips

Once in a week, i will publish my personal article about an advertising program which is Adsense. For those who still don’t know what Adsense is, it is a pay-per-click adevertising program which website publishers can use to menetize their websites.

The first thing you need to know about Adsense is it is not a program where you can earn money esily. Well to said, your website or your blog need lots of traffic to take full advantage of this program. Now, you must be wondering on how to improve your website traffic. From my experience, for the first time my website receive very little hits per day which is about 30-50 hits. Its really bad and to solve the problems, I have use these methods:

1) Add good content

2) Do a SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

3) Improve the site layout

When I added good content to the website, website traffic increases to 100 hits per day. Website visitors is always hungry to find new information in the net. Regardless what is the type of your website/blog is, you must create a truly original content for it. Don’t spend your time searching for free artilces because Adsense really don’t like duplicate contents.

Another tips is let your visitors know what your website/blog offers to its visitors. Create a section for your new website visitors what they can gain by visitng your website/blog. Suggest them to comment on your entry so that they will feel they are belonging to your blog/website.

From their comment and suggestion, you can improve your website/blog more. Now, thats for the section for getting website traffic.

The next factor that you must take care is SEO which means Search Engine Optimization. Search engine that we will focsu is Google. Google receive million search per day. you can imagine a lot of people go to Google everyday to search for infromation. If you’re lucky they will find your website. But it’s not an easy way to do because SEO need lots of hard work and patience. The first thing you need to do when you have a website/blog is by giving its url to Google so that its crawler can search your pages and then include them in Google search engine. For lots more information about SEO, go to our Webmaster Section. i have post lots of good tips for SEO there.
